At Guardian Unlimited Books I found this review of a children's book narrated by Bucephalas, Alexander the Great's horse. It sounds really wretched. Super-wretched, in fact. But it does make me wonder just how many examples of this bizarre, twee sub-sub-sub-genre exist. Richard Adam's Traveller, of course; but is there one about Churchill's parrot? Captain Cook's tortoises? FDR's Fala? Of course that last one reminds me of all the Presidential pet books that every recent administration seems to have done, and which would have to be counted - after all, most of them seem to be narrated by the little S.O.B.s.

Or we could have adult versions. "Tales of the Clenis"...

"Ben and Me," by Robert Lawson (I think). Ben Franklin's pet mouse, who's really responsible for all Franklin's inventions . . .
