Saturday night I wanted to try out Rifftrax, and decided to go with Plan 9 From Outer Space since that was one of the only titles they listed which I actually owned. Yeah, I could have gone out & rented one of the others, but . . . naah. Plus that 9 trax was slightly cheaper than the others.

I thought I'd test out some synching software and downloaded Sharecrow, but I had trouble setting it up and ended up just deleting it. Besides, I decided I didn't want to sit at my computer watching this.

Instead, simplicity ruled. I just dumped the trax on my MP3 player and took it into the den. It was extremely easy to synch the commentary up. It did drift slightly as the movie progressed, but the DisembAudio made it really simple to tell when that happened, and it was easily corrected by briefly pausing the MP3. I only had to do it once towards the end of the movie.

As for the experience itself --

Plan 9 is a very odd choice for MSTing, since as a friend once said, "it makes its own gravy." Realistically speaking, there is no way the commentary could be funnier than the actual unadulterated experience of this particular movie, and that's basically how it turned out. I would gauge my amusement level as moderate - there were some real belly laughs, but they were spread out a great deal. Plus there were broad patches of time with no comments at all! (Part of the problem was that on this one Mike Nelson was going solo, and I don't think univocality works with this kind of thing - you need some give and take. I noticed that Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett joined him on other traxes, and that is probably A Good Thing.) At the beginning there were a few abortive stabs at actual factual informativeness (e.g., telling us about Tor Johnson), but luckily that was quickly abandoned.

So, a slightly disappointing experience; but I do think I will give it another go - I recognize that Plan 9 was probably atypical. I'll rent a candidate from Netflix - one of the Star Wars prequels or maybe Willy Wonka . . .

I was reading a piece by Gregory Benford about his recent trip to Asia, and it included a picture of his visit with Clarke. A lot of Sir Arthur's shirt was hidden by his jacket, but it appeared to say:

I INVENTED THE COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT
